Tips for Building Trust in a Relationship

1. Do Not Say What You Can’t Do:

Being true to your word and backing them up with actions is one of the effective ways to create trust in your relationship. Making a promise and not keeping your promise makes you a liar in the eyes of others. To avoid this, you must not agree to what you cannot do and only say what you are sure you can do.

When you live up to your words, you gain respect and the trust of others. This is because people tend to trust someone who’s trustworthy.

2. You Must Be Willing to Express Your Feelings:

Effective Communication is an essential key factor in building a healthy and lasting relationship. You must always openly and honestly communicate your emotion with your partner, and show care to their feelings, too. Express clearly your feelings and needs to your partner and actively listen to him or her express theirs. Doing this will create understanding which in turn will build trust.

Again, expressing your feelings gives others the impression of your personality and how they can relate with you. Your partner is likely going to trust you if he or she knows what your care and needs are. So, open up and express those feelings.

3. Be Sincere and Honest:
Dishonesty is one factor that destroys trust in a relationship faster than any other thing. Make sure that whatever message you pass across is nothing but the truth, for once people notice that you are not truthful, they will not trust you. Lies, no matter how small it’s, can invalidate your reputation and severe your relationship with others. In marriage or other forms of relationships, you must make honesty your watchword.

4. Be Patient in Building Trust:

In relationships, trust is not built in a day. Building trust in a relationship takes time to do. It follows a gradual process. To create trust, you have to slightly make Commitment, as the relationship progresses and trust develops, you will be safer to make a bigger and accept more Commitments and so on. Trust begets trust; give trust and you will receive trust in return. Your partner is likely going to reciprocate any action you give out.

5. Admit Your Mistake Whenever You Err:

Admitting your mistake whenever you goof shows that you are sincere and honest. No one is infallible. Everyone is bound to make mistakes at any point in time. When you make a mistake, remind your partner that you are a human and human beings are full of imperfection. This also shows that you are not different from your partner who also makes mistakes, too. The end product of this demonstration will be trust.

Do not present yourself as a perfect person, for that will be suicidal, as you would be considered a pretender.

6. Treasure Your Relationship and Don’t Take it For Granted:

Every relationship is built on mutual benefit, and through consistency, trust is developed. Your partner will likely trust you if you are with them through thick and thin, and demonstrate it in concrete terms. Let your partner know that you treasure your relationship with him or her.

Marriage and other forms of relationships thrive when both parties place value on their relationship and work harmoniously to guarantee its success.

7. Be Polite with Your Partner:

Trust is built in a relationship where there’s mutual respect. Respect is very crucial for building trust in a relationship. Do not belittle or treat your partner with contempt, for that is the highest form of disrespect which is capable of destroying trust and the relationship. The way you show empathy and care to your partner’s needs and feelings is a sign of how much you respect and value him or her. Sow a seed of trust by respecting your partner.

8. Practice Reciprocity:

Partners in a relationship or marriage should be willing to practice reciprocity for a healthy relationship. They should be ready to give as well as receive. Relationship thrives on giving and receiving principle. Do not be selfish and don’t tolerate selfishness from your partner. Be ready to render a selfless service to your partner and watch out how trust will germinate and grow.

9. Uphold Your Value System:

When you do what you believe to be right and not doing something for approval, you create room for people to trust you. Doing something for eye service makes you lose trust in yourself, value and belief. People tend to trust you when you stick to your value and belief irrespective of opposition. Some people will not agree with you when you have a set of value and belief, but if you persist, they will come back to acknowledge your uniqueness.

In relationships, your partner will likely trust you when you are not ready to trade your values for anything whatsoever.

10. Show emotional vulnerability:
Trust is developed when partners become emotionally vulnerable to each other. Being emotional vulnerable with your partner involves revealing your deepest feelings or anything that can predispose you to hurt, and trusting that your partner will not use it against you, and your partner doing same. Let me say that no relationship involving love can thrive without emotional vulnerability, because anything outside it, is living in pretense. So, trust is built when you are aware that your partner has the capacity to hurt you you, yet he or she didn’t.
